Raku An international exhibition of Raku pottery debuts in Ketchum this winter. Developed from a symposium of the world’s best Raku artists led by Jim Romberg, former director of the ceramics program at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts (1972-1986), the exhibition will travel across America and Europe. Raku, meaning enjoyment or ease, was developed in the 16th century during a Japanese Tea Ceremony. It differs from other ceramics due to the practice of removing pieces from the kiln while still hot and manipulating the glazes while still molten. The piece pictured, Romberg’s “Ode to a Canyon,” is part of the exhibition. Proceeds from sales fund the Legacy Arts in Education Program, a foundation dedicated to bringing experiential arts education into the public school system. The exhibition, which is at Gail Severn Gallery, continues through the first two weeks of February. — Jennifer Tuohy |
