Giving Life in the Wood River Valley is marked by an abundance of worthy charitable organizations. Benefits and fundraisers are frequent, and giving of your time or funds is an estimable local pastime. These African orphans were the recent beneficiaries of this valley’s philanthropy. Barely two years old, Peter DeBaun’s Fishing for Life charity raised enough funds to build a 10-room orphanage in Ndola, Zambia. DeBaun, a fishing guide at Silver Creek Outfitters in Ketchum, donates earnings from specific work days to the charity. His employer, Terry Ring, also dedicates entire days of retail and guiding proceeds to Fishing for Life. This past year, they raised $42,000 and plans are set to build another, similar facility. “The entire heart of the benefit is to do nothing but feed and educate orphans,” said DeBaun, who is pictured among his new friends. — Michael Ames |
