 winter 2006
about us

editor's note

In a cold and dark winter’s morning, sitting in a snaking line of motionless cars on Highway 75, my thoughts turn to my former home of London, England. I think to myself, “Did I really escape anything?”

Then the sunlight brushes the tips of the Smokys and slowly the beauty of our valley is revealed. The grandeur of that moment continues to surprise, amaze and encourage me. For no matter what may change in our own lives, or on the valley’s floor, the mountains will always be there.

As a new wife and the new editor of the Sun Valley Guide, change is something with which I have become intimately familiar over this past year. And, as this valley struggles with its own transition, the time seemed right for this magazine to take some new steps.

In our continued effort to succeed and excel in our role as chroniclers of this valley, we have introduced several new elements that further explore its people, places and desires. From a visual feast reveling in one of the valley’s favorite pastimes, to an intimate chat with a true local who reveals a tale or two about this town’s history, take us with you as your guide through the wondrous world of the Wood River Valley.

contributors

Michael Ames, an all-purpose writer for the Idaho Mountain Express, has both regular and decaf days.

Betsy Andrews has a degree in art history from Mount Holyoke College. She’s been a freelance writer for 10 years and made her first quilt when she was five.

Dana DuGan has a bit of get up and go, whether it’s arts, theater, gardens or music. But she can mostly be found sitting on a ball, at the Idaho Mountain Express where she is a staff writer.

Angela Erickson, a lifelong resident of the Wood River Valley, has nearly mastered the art of a perfect omelette. She enjoys eating and
writing about great food when she is not out in the garden.

Tony Evans is a freelance writer and teacher living in Hailey. He recently spent one year living in a solar-powered Airstream Overlander.

Gregory Foley is the assistant editor of the Idaho Mountain Express. In traveling the globe, he has had close encounters with polar bears,
howler monkeys and oceanic whitetip sharks, but is still waiting to see
a wolverine.

Matt Furber is a staff writer for the Idaho Mountain Express. Writing is his tool for expressing rewarding experiences found exploring the outdoors, learning foreign languages and contemplating cross-cultural differences at home and abroad.

David Harrison is the former editor/publisher of Canoe & Kayak Magazine. He has been a Nordic ski patroller on the North Valley Trails for long enough to know that it’s all about food.

Rebecca Meany, a staff writer for the Idaho Mountain Express, likes to wander around the hills above Hailey, wondering about the people who may have trod the same dirt previously.

Greg Moore is a reporter for the Idaho Mountain Express and a second-generation skier on Bald Mountain.

Pat Murphy, the former editorial page editor and publisher of The Arizona Republic, is now a freelance writer in Ketchum.

Don Nielson is a displaced Idahoan whose roots intertwine slightly with those of the publisher. Though he left Idaho, Idaho never really left him and he returns often.

Chris Pilaro is a freelance photographer and documentary film producer.

David N. Seelig is both a freelance photographer and a staff photographer for the Idaho Mountain Express.

Megan Thomas is a staff writer for the Idaho Mountain Express. She delights in powder turns and blue-sky days.
