about us

editor's note

In a job quite separate from editing the Sun Valley Guide, I spend some of my winter days working for the ski patrol on Baldy. And when a big winter storm rolls in overnight, bringing with it a silent and steady snow over the valley, the patrol heads up the mountain in the early, dark hours to do avalanche control work. Riding up the chairlift, I always make a point to look over my shoulder to see Ketchum lit up, much like the photo above: vibrant, warm, full of promise. That image—the glittering lights abutting a mountain of pristine powder—is a favorite of mine because it expresses the special nature of the place in which we live. The exquisite beauty and endless recreational opportunities of the area are complemented by a community rich with visual and performing arts, vibrant businesses, diverse talents and an outspoken electorate—elements not normally expected of a “ski town.”

Perhaps this used to be a ski town, but it is so much more now. In fact, the culture of the valley is to intertwine these pursuits, intellectual and physical, in search of a life greater than the sum of its parts.

It is my hope that the Sun Valley Guide, in the stories and photographs of the people here, illuminates the richness of this lovely place.

contributors

Dana DuGan is a staff writer for the Idaho Mountain Express, a mother, gardener, and performer, and thanks to the inspiration of all the scintillating musicians in the valley, is now learning the mandolin.

Gregory Foley is a staff writer and food columnist for the Idaho Mountain Express. He wrote his debut novel, “The Clarity of Light,” after spending four years in Europe teaching North Americans about food, wine and 21-speed bikes.

Matt Furber is a staff writer for the Idaho Mountain Express. Writing is his tool for expressing rewarding experiences found exploring the outdoors, learning foreign languages and contemplating cross-cultural differences at home and abroad.

Becky Lomax is a writer living in northwest Montana. She spends her winters dabbling in various Nordic skiing disciplines, including maintaining a ski trail in her backyard.

Jennifer Pattison is the arts editor of the Idaho Mountain Express. An import from England where she worked for London’s Daily Telegraph, she relinquished the big city for the isolated splendor of Idaho a little over a year ago. She is slightly worried that no one will ever find her again, but only slightly.

Barbara Perkins, associate editor of the Sun Valley Guide and former editor of the Idaho Mountain Express newspaper, spends her winters writing and playing in the snow.

David N. Seelig is both a freelance photographer and a staff photographer for the Idaho Mountain Express. He was in New York for years working as a rock ’n’ roll and sports photographer.

Greg Stahl defines himself through a myriad of life outlets. When it’s not music, it’s writing. When it’s not skiing, it’s kayaking. When it’s not work, it’s researching about a variety of topics pertinent to living in the West in the 21st century. “I’m adrift on the ocean of life,” he says, “where the sun always rises and sea always changes.”

Adam Tanous is the editor of the Sun Valley Guide and copy editor for the Idaho Mountain Express. One of his favorite winter activities is lobbing bombs onto freshly loaded ski slopes. Skiing the powder afterward is pretty fun, too.

Megan Thomas, a staff writer for the Idaho Mountain Express, is a graduate of Colby College who heeded the whisper of the mountains and returned to her Idaho roots.

Jody Zarkos is the sports editor for the Friday edition of the Idaho Mountain Express and sports director at KECH and KSKI Radio in Ketchum.
