Community Christmas Tree Lighting—Santa arrives by fire truck at the Heritage and Ski Museum and pulls the switch to light the official Ketchum Christmas Tree. The event will feature a children’s choir and hot beverages. Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the museum, corner of Washington Avenue and First Street in Ketchum. Details: 726-8118.

Basic Avalanche Course—Learn basic avalanche-awareness skills from a panel of snow experts. The course starts with a classroom session Dec. 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Hemingway School in Ketchum, followed by an optional field session Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Presented by the Sawtooth National Forest Avalanche Center. “A Christmas Carol”—An ensemble of six actors tells Charles Dickens’ timeless tale of Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Performances will be held Dec. 9-22 at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey. Showtimes are: 10 a.m. “student matinees” Dec. 9-11 and 16-18; 7 p.m. Dec. 12-14 and 19-21; and 3 p.m. matinees Dec. 15 and 22. Kids’ Craft Day—Children are invited to the Sawtooth Botanical Garden on Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to make crafts and Christmas presents. The garden is located at the corner of Highway 75 and Gimlet Road, south of Ketchum. Details: 726-9358.

Christmas Eve in Sun Valley—Enjoy a magical evening at the Sun Valley Ice Rink. Gather on the Lodge terrace to hear the Sun Valley Carolers, enjoy the annual “Christmas on Ice” show and see a spectacular torchlight parade wend its way down Bald Mountain before fireworks light the sky. Wells Fargo Boulder Mountain Tour—One of Idaho’s most popular ski races, the 32-kilometer Boulder Mountain Tour will kick off Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. from Senate Meadows, just east of the Galena Lodge. Racers will descend 1,000 feet as they ski rolling terrain to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters at North Fork. Registration is required. Free Gallery Tours—Enjoy a one-hour tour of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts’ gallery. The gallery will feature an exhibition of paintings, photos and videos examining house architecture. The tours will be led by curator Jennifer Gately, Feb. 1 and Feb. 15, from 11 a.m. to noon. Details: 726-9491.

Cross Country Ski Festival—The 9th annual cross-country festival will begin Feb. 2 at 10 a.m., as skiers head north from the Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters to Galena Lodge.
