editor's note

When I first took on the job of editing the Sun Valley Guide in January 2001, the challenge then seemed to be to find enough interesting and region-specific stories to fill a 132-page feature magazine. Four years later, the most daunting task has become finding enough room in the magazine to tell all of the stories we have to tell.

For a small community, the Wood River Valley has a surprising number of little universes within it. And within those little universes are people doing surprising things. Once a ski resort home to ski bums, the area now is filled with artists, investment bankers, architects, writers, woodworkers, musicians, surgeons and entrepreneurs. And yes, many of them still desperately love to ski and snowboard.

This is an unusual community in that it is a self-selected melting pot of sorts. It comprises individuals from many walks of life—some natives, some transplants—all of whom have decided to find the delicate balance between work and play. These are people who have not only chosen to live in a stunning environment, but also to be inspired by it. As the saying goes, they are living the dream, improvising as need or desire arises.

On a personal note, this will be my last issue of the Sun Valley Guide. I’ll be doing some improvising of my own. I will miss the talented staff of the Sun Valley Guide, and I will miss reading firsthand about the many people who make this lovely area a true community.

contributors

Michael Ames is a staff writer for the Idaho Mountain Express, yard game aficionado and a discerning produce shopper at local farmers’ markets.

Tina Cole is an artist, writes about her travels and the people she encounters and is currently somewhere in Outer Mongolia with her husband and 16-year-old son.

Dana DuGan is a staff writer for the Idaho Mountain Express. She lives in Hailey with her family. While still a New Yorker, she dreamed of living here, thanks to one magical fall visit to Redfish Lake.

Gregory Foley is writer, copy editor and food columnist for the Idaho Mountain Express. He wrote his debut novel, “The Clarity of Light,” in the late 1990s, after traveling the globe in search of the perfect mai tai and finest grilled shrimp.

Pat Murphy is a former newspaper reporter, editor and publisher in Florida and Arizona, who now free-lances for newspapers and magazines from Ketchum.

Jennifer Pattison, arts editor of the Idaho Mountain Express, is originally from London, England. She relinquished the big city for the magical beauty of Idaho at the urging of the young gentleman who will make her Mrs. Tuohy this fall.

Barbara Perkins is a writer, Web designer and marketing consultant, who frequently contributes to the Sun Valley Guide and other products developed by Express Publishing.

David N. Seelig is both a freelance photographer and a staff photographer for the Idaho Mountain Express.

Greg Stahl barely knew what a salmon was when he moved to Idaho six years ago, but in taking up kayaking, he has had a number of close encounters with the extraordinary big fish on the creeks and rivers of the state. Looking eye to eye with a dying chinook salmon was among the more mysterious, contemplative moments he can recall.

Tony Taylor is a native of Montana and has lived in the Wood River Valley since 1970. He resides in Hailey and researches and writes on a variety of Western subjects.

Megan Thomas is a staff writer for the Idaho Mountain Express who retired musical pursuits for the symphony of the mountains.
