summer 2003

Note
There
are a surprising number of people who have come to the Wood River
Valley for a weekend and stayed for a lifetime. And no doubt those who
did vividly remember the experience of that first day in this lovely
place. For some it was the sweet summer air that filled them up; for
others it was the meandering rivers. For still others the mountains—the
Boulder-White Clouds, the Pioneers, the Sawtooths and Smokys—took their
breath away.
If there’s one
unifying theme to the community of the Wood River Valley and those who
visit, it is a keen appreciation of the natural environment. And indeed,
as I looked back over the story ideas we decided on for the 2003 summer
issue of the Sun Valley Guide, I was struck by that common motif.
Among our features
this summer is a story on how the Forest Service looks after our
National Forests—the century-old practice of staffing fire lookouts. We
peek into the curious lives of beavers and the valuable role they play
in the riparian ecosystem. We meet the fly tying masters of Sun
Valley—men and women who have brought art to the task of mimicking
nature. And then there’s the story of “Two Gun” Bob Limbert, a man who
was the driving force for designating the stunning Craters of the Moon
National Monument.
In our departments
section we explore art—from printmaking and bronze sculpture to
literature and music. There are stories on designing with pavers and
summer fitness, summer salads and margaritas. And, in the end, of
course, there’s recreation—all those activities that keep us in touch
with the big wide world out there.
