Sun Valley
Seasons

To me Sun Valley summers mean world-class fly fishing and nothing says fly fishing better than Silver Creek. This image was taken in late summer at Silver Creek’s Sullivan Slough, known locally as “The Shark Tank” for the extremely large brown trout that lurk in its waters. As evening approached, large browns began to gently sip bugs off the water, and I was fortunate enough to witness and photograph this fish get hooked and landed. Days like this make me cherish this beautiful place we call home.

It was first from a small plane that I decided I would hang my hat in Ketchum. While flying into the Salmon River in a small plane, I saw this little hamlet nestled amongst powerful, rugged mountains. ‘There it is! Right there! That’s where I want to live!’ A couple of months later I rolled into town living in my van and not knowing a soul. The reason I like Ketchum is I ground myself by being alone in nature. I need more stars in the sky than city lights.
It’s the mountains, baby!

Dawn at Redfish Lake and a velvet blanket of mist lifts, as a curtain, to welcome one into the serenity and adventure of Idaho’s majestic meadows and mountains.

Ro Fire, 1992
This is the most intense color I have ever photographed. The fire, which occurred August 4, 1992, between Hailey and Bellevue, had already burned the east-facing hills. The red glow was caused by the fire raging on the other side of the hills, glowing off the smoke cloud.

I was shooting an assignment in Hailey when I heard this great laughter behind me. I turned to see three girls enjoying the first signs of spring. I’m glad I snapped a few frames—they always make me smile.

The transition fall brings to the valley is palpable; it affects people as well as nature. The early morning and late evening light boldly illuminate the warm colors of the season. One of the many great attributes of the Wood River Valley
is the constant seasonal change.

Outdoor summer concerts in the Wood River Valley are like winter powder days; people come out of the woodwork to participate.
Great girl watching, picnic baskets, fabulous tunes, kids dancing, warm weather and frivolous attitudes all contribute to a wonderful outdoor concert scene. Mr. Supernatural, Carlos Santana playing locally outdoors in the summer is as summer as summer gets.

Buddy Guy is one of the great,
traditional blues guitarists in the world. The blues is a form that is
not so popular in the West. He puts on a concert with enough rock ’n’
roll to entertain us all and leave us feeling good, just as living in these mountains leaves us feeling good.

This photo says it all about my love for this valley. A 20-minute run or mountain bike ride will get you up off the valley floor to enjoy the quiet solitude and spectacular views with your best (furry) friend. This shot of Patrick Csizmazia in Adams Gulch was taken in June when the snow still lingers up high and the foothills are cloaked in vivid green.

There is not a time of year when I don’t like to take photos of Sun Valley, however, fall is my favorite. What excites me most about photographing fall is the changing weather and the soft low light. I love the beautiful colors of the trees and the reflections in the water. The blue cloud-covered sky and the dark threatening sky are also exciting to shoot. Baldy is so important to us all, it is why we live here, and it is our life. This view is from Trail Creek Road taken in the fall of 2000.
