Mountain
bikes move fast and are light in weight.
You can easily be 10 or more miles from a
main highway. And, according to Murphy's
Law, you will have a breakdown when you
are at the greatest distance from help.
With a few simple
tools to make repairs, you can finish
your ride, or at the very least, get back
to safety in the event of a problem.
Without them, you could face a long walk
or an overnight bivouac. Be prepared!
Make sure you have the following:
Tire pump
that fits your type of valve
(Presta or Schrader) |
Tire
patch kit (a second tube is also
a good idea) |
Tire
irons (plastic are best) |
Screwdrivers
that fit the screws on your bike
Hex
wrenches that fit your bike
(usually 4mm, 5mm and 6mm)
Chain
tool |
Chain oil
Seat bag
to carry all of the tools
Only one person
in a riding group needs to have these
items, as long as the tools work on
everybody's bike.
Also, buy a seat
bag to carry all of the tools.
