Bike Route Summary
Summary

Mountain biking can be a sedate or challenging activity, depending on the ride you have chosen. You should however, always be safety conscious. On a mountain bike it does not take long to be ten or more miles from safety. There are a few basic items that will help protect you and could make a difference between riding back on a bike or in an ambulance. They are the following:

  Always wear a helmet.
Always bring more water than you think you will need. Avoid drinking from streams or lakes because of the potential of giardia.
Gloves. Padded biking gloves are great, both for padding from the bars and when you use your hands in a fall. In colder weather, add polypro liners or try cross country ski gloves.
Chamois bike pants are very comfortable. Some brands even have hip padding for protection in falls.
All-terrain biking shoes. Optional, but they improve biking efficiency significantly and give you more stable platform when riding downhill.

Also, expect weather to change quickly in the mountains. It can be hot, dry cold and wet in one day. Storms move in quickly and leave just as fast. Be prepared.

Layering, is the key to successful dressing. Consider carrying the following when you ride:

Comfortable top. Cotton is good in warmer weather. Long sleeves protect you better in a fall, and can be pulled up for climbing. A mid-weight Polypro is great for cold and wet weather.

Wind/Rain shell. Many choices are available. A lighter shell is better because you are more likely to take it and use it.
Lightweight tights. Packs small, yet adds significant warmth for your legs.
Sunscreen to protect your skin from the high altitude sun.
Sunglasses or sports shield that provide eye and wind protection.
  Extra food.
  Compass and maps.
Small emergency kit that includes a first aid kit, waterproof materials, pocket knife, signal mirror and insect repellent.
