Summary
ABOUT THE RIDE: This ride links Greenhorn Gulch with Warm Springs Road. It can be demanding at times, with steep terrain. At the top, there is a camp with great views. At the end, there are soothing hot springs.

GETTING THERE: Drive south from Ketchum on State Highway 75 for five and one-half miles. Turn right (west) onto Greenhorn Gulch Road (look for the "Golden Eagle Ranch" sign). Drive three and one-half miles. Park at the turnaround by the restrooms (just past the old fire guard station). Note: Greenhorn Gulch is a private road. Respect the home owners' rights by not speeding or driving on their property. Motorcycles are prohibited on this road.

THE RIDE: From the parking lot, take the dirt road heading southwest up the canyon. Pass the gate, leaving it as you found it. Continue up the road one-half mile through two stream crossings (which may be dry) to the junction of Greenhorn and Mahoney Creeks. Take the right fork up (north) Mahoney Creek. The road turns into a trail that quickly steepens, rideable only by experts or by pushing your bike.

After one and one-half miles, take the fork on the right (straight) where Lodgepole\Mahoney Trail splits. If you come to a stream crossing in 100 yards, you have gone on the wrong fork of the trail.

The trail is level here, but steepens - forcing most to push their bike. In one and one-half miles will be the summit, before which you will pass a sheepherder's camp. The trail is often wet here due to a covered spring nearby. Avoid drinking the water (it may contain giardia). Push your bike through the mud to protect the trail.

From the camp, take the trail on the right hand side. It will cross the saddle, then drop into the Red Warrior Creek drainage. The trail is steep for three-quarters of a mile. From here, it will be middle gear riding into and out of the creek to Warm Springs Road, three and one-half miles from the sheepherder's camp. After the creek crossings you can soak in the hot springs.
