| ABOUT
THE RIDE: This is a great early season
ride for intermediate and advance riders. It has
one mandatory bike push. At Kinsey Summit, there
are great views of the Deer Creek drainage, Smoky
Mountains and Poison Flat area. From the summit,
it is a great downhill ride. GETTING THERE:
Drive south of Ketchum nine miles on State
Highway 75 and turn right onto Deer Creek Road,
look for the National Forest access sign. The
radio station KSKI is located on the east side of
State Highway 75. Drive 10 miles west on Deer
Creek Road. Park near the corral at the main fork
of the Deer Creek Trailhead.
THE RIDE: Ride
west approximately two miles to a rock cairn.
Turn left (south) onto the Curran Gulch Trail,
which immediately crosses Deer Creek. This single
track trail will roll gently uphill into trees.
In two miles you will come to a creek bottom. At
this point there will be a trail sign for Kinsey
Summit, to the left (east) and Buttercup
Mountain, straight ahead (southeast).
Take the left (east) fork to
Kinsey Summit. There should be heavy erosion at
the beginning of this segment of the trail. From
here, push your bike for about 3/4 mile. This
should take 10-15 minutes.
At the top of the bike push,
the graded lessens and you can start riding
again. The trail continues up, with several
switchbacks. You will be riding towards Kinsey
Summit. Five miles into this ride, an open summit
appears, providing great views of Deer Creek
drainage to the northeast.
At the summit, you will
intersect another trail (Wolftone trail). Proceed
straight and descend into Kinsey Creek. After a
series of fast downhill switchbacks, the trail
connects with a dirt road. This road will also be
fast and downhill, all the way to Deer Creek. At
Deer Creek you will be required to wade across,
because the bridge is out. Turn left onto Deer
Creek Road and ride west one mile to your car.
