Summary
ABOUT THE RIDE: This "out and back" ride is know for the views at the summit and a great downhill ride. Since there is little tree cover during the climb, it is recommended that you take this trail in the morning or evening on hot days.

GETTING THERE: Drive five miles south on State Highway 75 and turn left (east) at East Fork Road. Drive six miles (one and one-half miles past Triumph), then turn left at the Hyndman Creek turnoff. Drive another three miles to the first stream crossing, where Johnstone Creek and other creeks come together.

THE RIDE: Bear Gulch Trail starts off as a dirt road heading to the left as you look north. Do not take the Johnstone Creek Trail, which is the right fork going towards Pioneer Cabin. The road goes through a corral and a gate that you should leave as you found it. Stay on the road for two miles. The road then turns into a single track and begins to climb.

Bear Gulch Creek has eroded much of the beginning sections of the trail and therefore it may be hard to follow. Just make sure that you stay on the right (northeast) side of the canyon. The trail has several switchbacks and you might have to push your bike. You ascend for two miles on a ridgeline, after which it will seem like you are on top of the world. There are great views of Johnstone Peak (north), and the Pioneer, Boulder and Smoky Mountains. From here, it is a great descent on a good trail. Be ready for sharp switchbacks and equestrians. Eventually, you will pass a cabin in Parker Gulch. Do not cross onto the private property. You can now turn back up Parker Gulch.
