A little bit of information about the Ketchum Ranger District which is
a part of the 2,186,024 acres compromising the Sawtooth National
Forest. It is managed by the Forest Service part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 325,000 acres includes portions of the Smoky Mtns., Pioneer Mtns., (12,000 ft.) Hyndman Peak, the highest Peak in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.

The Sawtooth National Recreation Area is one of the largest & most
magnificent recreation areas in the United States. Four mountain ranges,
The Sawtooths, Boulder, White Clouds and Smokys Provide Scenic
Landscape in every direction, with 40 peaks 10,000 feet or higher. There are more than 300 high mountain lakes here as well as the headwaters of four of Idaho's major rivers, The Salmon, Payette, Boise and Bigwood.

Year Round Recreation

The Sawtooth National Forest has the highest recreation use of any Idaho Forest estimated at 2 milliion visits annually. Summer and Fall activities within the Ketchum District and the Sawtooth NRA include fishing, hiking, camping, horseback riding, picnicking, mountain climbing, nature trail, wildlife viewing, interpretive programs, mountain biking, motorbiking, hunting, offroad vehicle travel, bird watching, airplane tours, llama trekking, lake canoeing, swimming, kayaking, waterskiing, and whitewater floatboating.

During the winter and spring, popular activities are nordic and backcountry alpine skiing at the famed Bald Mtn. ski area, sledding, snow-mobiling, snowshoeing, ice skating, steelhead fishing and winter camping.
