about
us
editor's note
“Best of all he loved
the fall,” rang the voice of Ernest Hemingway as he read aloud a eulogy
for Sun Valley friend Gene Van Guilder in 1939. Hemingway’s oft-repeated
words strike the heart of sentiment for many Sun Valley locals and
visitors who annually worship the blaze of color aspens brush across
this already spectacular valley to herald the coming snows and plethora
of fall events.
As writers and visual
artists ourselves, we could no longer resist the urge to paint the fall
with words and photographs of life in Sun Valley, past and present,
during this special season.
And so debuts our
first fall edition, stroking the essence of Hemingway’s life here, the
survival of our elk herds, the Sawtooth memories of author John Rember
and the fading life of the very aspen groves that usher in the season’s
delights.
Then we change gears
to check out the picture-perfect views framed by windows, cook up some
flavorful trout and check out the local dream job of Kevin Syms’
photography.
We hope you enjoy
this amazing season with us.

Michael Ames,
a New Jersey native and fish aficionado, is a staff writer for the Idaho
Mountain Express.
Gregory Foley is the assistant editor of the Idaho Mountain
Express. His interest in Ernest Hemingway’s writing was enlivened while
studying literature at the University of Colorado. He released his debut
novel, “The Clarity of Light,” in 2004.
Edward Hemmings of Ketchum spins news, reviews and features with
credits at “The Good Times,” KXSC Radio and “The Phish Wrap Live” in
Santa Cruz, Calif.
Mia James, an eight-year resident and lifelong visitor to the
Wood River Valley, is a freelance writer specializing in outdoor sports
and the sports industry, although she enjoys writing on any topic.
Rebecca Meany, staff writer for the Idaho Mountain Express, grew
up in Boise eating beef jerky. While living in San Francisco, she
experimented with tofu; meals during her stays in Chicago and New York
were anything on the run. She has come back to Idaho to learn how to
cook and enjoy trout.
Jennifer Pattison, arts editor of the Idaho Mountain Express, is
originally from London, England. Her favorite thing about living here is
that her desk is by a window.
Chris Pilaro is a freelance photographer and documentary film
producer.
Paul Potters, a longtime resident and former English and
photography instructor at The Community School, enjoys writing about
fishing, hunting, and outdoor sports (especially extreme sports), as
well as arts and food topics.
David N. Seelig is both a freelance photographer and a staff
photographer for the Idaho Mountain Express.
Greg Stahl, who respectfully declines to be pigeonholed as a
writer or reporter, enjoys an array of life’s finer pleasures. When the
aspens turn gold and the autumn evenings start to bite, he loves nothing
more than the solitude of an alpine ridge in the abundance of nearby
wild country. They’re experiences he might even write about.
