While the Main Street “Running of the Sheep” may be the outstanding feature of the nine-year-old Trailing of the Sheep, the festival is packed full of events that celebrate Idaho’s sheep culture and contribution to the state’s heritage. As the final flocks move south from their northern summer pastures, the towns of Ketchum and Hailey host sheep dog trials, musical performances, and a folklife fair that honors cultural influences—such as Basque and Peruvian—brought to Idaho by the sheep industry. A highlight of this year’s festival will be a presentation by novelist Ivan Doig about his writing and his life on Montana sheep ranches.
